I found a space in my office for three paintings, 12"x12". The background is white so I thought of doing a series about the famous Japanese gates, called Toriis. This is the second one of this series, with a amical wink towards Jin7.
In 2011, I visited the Torii at the Itsukushima shrine near Hiroshima, Japan (see alternative picture) which can only be visited a few hours a day since most of the time, the tides have flooded the area. This time, the painted torii is more or less a good replica/silhouette of the one I visited in Japan!
The painting was prepared with white gesso, red (scarlet) acryl and finished with black markers and black gesso (for the water). For the latter, I used the technique as described in my article.
Please enjoy, arigato!
Yes, that's the very shrine I visited. Beautiful small island there in that region!
It is not very near Mount Fuji, where you live, so can understand you have not been there (yet). Hiroshima and environments are VERY much worth the effort of staying and visiting for a few days!
Dear Voy
I would like to go to Hiroshima as one of the Japanese people, where many people were affected by the atomic bomb and many victims were killed, but I can't go there now due to family reasons. However, I definitely want to visit the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Memorial and Itsukushima shrine.
Dear Jin, I can recommend the trip. The museum is great but can grab you by the throat since very few is censored there. I believe that is good, people need to know what really happened there.
This is in contrast with 'Auschwitz' in Poland (which I visited in 2010), where most of it was censored. Also here, I was not unhappy since it would take a very strong person to really learn what the Nazi's did there and I'm not such person.
Hiroshima region has a lot more since you have, to name a few, the Samurai fortress, the trip to the Itsukushima shrine, a visit to the Yamamoto museum (100% worth it!!) and a visit to a real submarine in the same area!
I fell in love with Japan thanks to Kyoto and Hiroshima.
